Ende September 2004 haben sich gut vierzig KMU-Forscher auf Einladung des KMU-HSG in Appenzell zu den alle zwei Jahre stattfindenden "Rencontres de St-Gall" getroffen. Hauptthema der Rencontres 2004 war "Value Creation in Entrepreneurship and SMEs / Wertgenerierung durch Unternehmertum und KMU". Das Hauptthema wurde aufgeteilt in vier Unterthemen, nämlich "Resource Based Value Creation", "Structural Value Creation", "Network Value Creation" und "Individual Value Creation".
Das Buch beinhaltet rund vierzig für die Konferenz eingereichte Beiträge der Teilnehmer.
