Abstract |
This paper explores the role of the internet and social media in changing perceptions of China within China and abroad by focusing on transcultural communication in China's new cybersphere during the era of globalisation. As China is catapulted towards its new status as the new superpower, a new generation of urban citizens communicates its dreams and aspirations for the post-socialist society and a both globalising and localising future. This project investigates the rhetoric of transcultural communication (goutong ??, jiaoliu ??) to find out how the new artists and writers critique contemporary Chinese society using the new digital media, in particular Web 2.0. Analysis focuses on three case studies: a) novelist-cum-blogger Han Han; b) Internet author Anni baobei (Annie Baby); and c) the ‘Utopian Team' artistic duo He Hai and Deng Dafei. They share a social concern with the experiences of a new urban generation during China's consumer revolution. This research analyses the three main themes of the ‘glocalising' (globalising/ localising) cityscape, the transcultural travel of trends, and the new urban dreams and nightmares within the cultural and socio-political contexts to shed new light on cultural production in the cybersphere as a social and political barometer. |
