Abstract |
Stakeholder management is a key way for firms to gain useful knowledge for firm innovation. In light of substantial inter-firm heterogeneity in the performance effects of stakeholder management, we examine the implications of alignment and misalignment between the firm’s stakeholder management efforts and its innovation strategy. We distinguish between exploratory and exploitative innovation strategies as well as between external and internal stakeholders. Our findings suggest that firms will benefit more from aligning their stakeholder management and innovation strategy and may even experience negative effects from misalignment. Combined primary survey and time-lagged secondary data from 222 European firms broadly supports our arguments. |
