Abstract
Driven by new technologies and business models of market entrants, competing incumbents increasingly cooperate in ecosystems and contribute to the value proposition of innovative products or services. Although such cooperation requires incumbents to take a leap of faith that enables them to trust each other despite the risk of opportunistic behavior, research has been mostly silent on this critical issue. Therefore, this study explores how and why trust evolves in a Central European ecosystem with more than 70 competing retail banks, a financial infrastructure provider, a payment processor, several retailers, and other actors that together develop and provide the mobile payment scheme. Based on our findings, we expect to provide valuable practical implications and make significant theoretical contributions.
