Abstract | Firms and nature reciprocally influence each other. Businesses’ extraction and use of natural resources have pushed the natural environment to its limits. At the same time, businesses depend directly or indirectly on natural resources and are facing growing pressure. Proponents of the Resource Dependence Theory have recognized more than 50 years ago that organizations depend on external resources. However, only recently has this theory been extended to also include the firm’s reliance on the natural environment. With the increasing scarcity of natural resources or even a cease in supply, the power relationship between nature and businesses is rapidly changing and becoming increasingly relevant for business. In this Professional Development Workshop, we ask participants to consider the role of power in the Natural Resource Dependence Theory. We also aim to gauge interest in developing a special issue on this topic for further theorizing and testing. |
