It is not only the involvement of the customer that leads to a market orientation, but it is the obligation to understand and anticipate the customer requirement and to strive for a solution with joined forces of R&D, the businesses, and any additional, potentially valuable external part-ner. The five companies have broken up the tendency to protect each and every finding and have pruned their patent portfolios to actively manage a powerful number of patents with higher values.
