Microeconometric Analysis of the Structure and Dynamics of the Labour Market in Switzerland

Michael Lechner, Patrick Puhani & Dragana Djurdjevic

abstract Whereas the phenomenon of long-term unemployment has already attracted a lot of attention in the research community, the problem of repeated unemployment spells is a relatively under-researched topic.
The first step of this research project consists of a descriptive analysis of Swiss unemployment using panel data. The aim is to identify groups with high unemployment and / or low income incidence. In the second step, our research will focus on the causes of low labour market attachment or low success on the labour market. Methodologically, we will apply a transition data model. The advantage of this procedure is that in such models both the previous stay in a labour force state (such as unemployment) and socio-economic individual characteristics can be identified separated as potential causes for labour market problems. The data basis for this research will be a matched data set from the Swiss AHV (public pension system) and AVAM/ASAL (public employment services) data bases. The third and last step will be the development of policy conclusions.
