Exploring cognition and decision-making within the cleantech industry

version abrégée Establishing successful cleantech businesses is of high economic, social and ecological relevance for societies. On a firm-level decision-making is crucial in that regard. So the question matters, how managers and entrepreneurs make their decisions within the cleantech industry. More than 50 years of organization and management theory provide sophisticated tools for successful and rational decision-making and serve as the basis of management education (e.g. managerial economics, structured decision-processes etc.). However, important underlying assumptions for the effectiveness of such “rational” decision-making appear to be challenged in the cleantech industry (e.g. information is not perfectly available, time constraints are evident etc.). Thus, this project reaches out to practitioners within the cleantech industry to survey how managers and entrepreneurs actually make decisions and how their decision-making is linked to firm performance. The project is a first step of a larger investigation of different modes of decision-making in emerging industries and how they relate to firm performance. The results will be used to improve management education.
