    Coordinating Growth Initiatives in Multi-Unit Firms
    Realising corporate growth remains a challenging task for most firms. In this paper, we examine how multi-unit corporations can effectively coordinate the evolution of their growth initiatives. Based upon research on coordination, we identify four ideal modes that corporations can adopt as a means to dealing with their growth ambitions. We label these four: agenda-setting, context-setting, directing and self-organising. We show how these coordination modes represent different options for corporate management and have different implications for the role split between top managers and managers on subsequent levels. We illustrate them by using primary and secondary data from 51 corporations based in Europe, North America and Asia. Each mode is connected with particular managerial challenges and is most effective in combination with specific context factors. Practitioners can use these insights to deliberately apply an appropriate coordination mode for their growth initiatives.

    An Agenda for Organizational Control Research: Looking through the Kaleidoscope of the Past and Present

    During the past 50 years, a substantial array of research on organizational control has been conducted in management. In spite of its historical prominence in strategic management and organization theory, control research has not been sufficiently cumulative. Organizational forms and environments have changed dramatically since theories concerning organizational control were developed, yet our theories and empirical research have not kept pace with the dramatic changes of our twentyfirst century. The purpose of this review is to make sense of this old, but fragmented research and to identify building blocks, critical relationships, trends, and a roadmap for future research.

    Informal Control Modes and Initiative Performance : The Moderating Role of Supervisors' Political Behavior

    In this paper, we focus on informal control modes (composed of certain levels of informal input, behavior, and output control) utilized by top managers to steer growth initiative teams. We propose that the informal control mode utilized interacts with the existing level of supervisor's political behavior to influence initiative performance. Survey data on strategic growth initiatives collected from 201 corporations serve to test our hypotheses. Our results of moderated regression analysis highlight the importance of adapting the control mode to the specific supervisors' political behavior.

    This chapter builds on the extensive prior work on control and especially its recent development into a broader configurational approach and applies it to the initiative level. Based on the concept of fit, we propose that each of six types of strategic initiatives is likely to benefit from a distinct control configuration able to accommodate its needs.

    Alliance Governance at Klarna: Managing and Controlling Risks of an Alliance Portfolio

    The case study object is the Swedish Internet start-up, Klarna, and its partnership-business model design and governance. Klarna provides payment solutions that increase sales for collaborating merchants in the e-commerce sector. Their invoice and installment payment services are an alternative for shoppers who do not want to pay via other services, such as credit cards, PayPalTM, or advance payment. Invoice payments are perceived as safe and simple to use and thus increase sales for merchants. Klarna's growth story represents very successful partner management. Klarna's great success primarily builds on its ability to minimize risk through effective alliance governance. This case study illustrates the governance and management of the alliance portfolio of Klarna and the interplay of control, trust, and risk in the interorganizational context. Special attention is given to the interrelation of important governance mechanisms, namely, agreement design, control mechanisms, and trust, and their influence on collaboration risks.
