PublicationSecond-Order Intervention: Enhancing Organizational Competence and PerformanceWhile most managerial interventions into organizational and business processes have the character of a direct interference, the interventions of consultants are rather indirect. They are meant to improve the organization and its performance, via a dialogue with the management. To clarify the sprcific role of consultants we shall introduce the concept of second-order intervention, therewith sharpening or, in a certain sense, redefining that role. We shall revert to a case study, which refers to a System Dynamics (SD) modelling and simulation project, to illustrate how a series of second-order interventions has opened new paths towards superior organizational competence and performance. This was an exploratory study, in the tradition of Action Research, not a hypothesis-testing venture.Type: journal articleJournal: Systems Research and Behavioral ScienceVolume: 23Issue: 4DOI: 10.1002/sres.780

PublicationSystem Dynamics and Cybernetics: A Necessary Synergy( 2004-07-08)
;Ríos, José PérezAmbroz, KristjanIn line with the conference theme - "Collegiality" - the authors propose to build a bridge between two Systems Approaches, namely System Dynamics (SD) and Management Cybernetics (MC). This synthesis is aimed at opening a path for a better capability to deal with complex issues of actors in both organizations and society. With their resprctive strengths - modelling and simulation of content issues for SD, and providing a viable organizational context for MC - a combination appears to be potentially promising. The authors propose the Integrated Systems Methodology as a framework for combining SD and MC, and they give practical illustrations to support their argument.Type: conference paper -
