    Scrutinizing the Sustainability of Business Models : System Dynamics for Robust Strategies
    ( 2014-06-30)
    Köpp, Sebastian
    ;
    The success or failure of a business hinges in the first place on the model that forms the basis of its commercial activities. Business models are needed in all kinds of enterprises. Often these models are not scrutinized with the necessary depth. In situations of high planning uncertainty, e.g., when starting a new business, the lack of data tools to assess the sustainability of business models tends to mislead investors and managers to superficial appraisals. The purpose of this contribution is to demonstrate how such an assess-ment can be organized, even when data are very scarce, in a way that it leads to crucial insights for strategists. We demonstrate how dynamic modeling and simulation can foster understanding, enabling decision-makers to select between sustainable versus flawed conceptions, and opening them clues for better ways of selecting and developing new strategic fields of business activity. For this aim, we have chosen a case study from e-commerce, within a family of business models which is novel and sufficiently complex as an exemplar. Additionally we have tested our findings on another business within the same sector. We show that with the help of System Dynamics modeling and simulation the test of a business model's sustainability can deliver high value to investors and man-agers, helping avoid fatal mistakes, and taking new opportunities.

    Group Buying Schemes : A Sustainable Business Model?
    ( 2013-02-06)

    Die Autoren gehen der Frage nach, ob "Group Buying Schemes" wie beispielsweise von den Unternehmen Groupon und Dein Deal angeboten, ein nachhaltiges Geschäftsmodell sind. Anhand der Fallstudie Groupon wird mit einem System Dynamics Modell festgestellt, dass das Geschäftsmodell geändert werden muss, wenn die Unternehmung auf Dauer lebensfähig sein soll. The authors examine if group buying schemes are a sustainable business model. By means of the Groupon case study and using a System Dynamics Model, they show that the business model must be changed, if the company wants to be viable in the long run.

    Model-Based Management (MBM): A Research Agenda
    (Universität St. Gallen, 2009-02-03)
    The purpose of this paper is to introduce and conceptualize the topic of Model-Based Management (MBM) in organizations. The importance of qualitative and quantitative models for management is highlighted, and a research agenda for this new topic is proposed. This agenda promises to make a contribution to the use of models for higher managerial effectiveness. The role of models for managerial purposes has been under-researched and often misunderstood. In this paper, an analysis of the concept, role and function of models in the context of management and organization is undertaken. A new understanding of both the concept and role of models in management, grounded in system science, is proposed, which the planned research program will explore. The gain promised by such an innovative scope derives from its high potential: Both theory and practice can benefit from the envisaged research. Theoretically speaking, advances in management and organization science can be achieved, while on the practical side the gained insights will caution managers and leaders against succumbing to the traps of complexity, while radically improving their managerial effectiveness. Ultimately, MBM should enhance the intelligence, adaptiveness and viability of organizations of any kind: private, public, non-profit, large or small.

    System Dynamics and the Evolution of the Systems Movement - A Historical Perspective
    (Universität St. Gallen, 2005-06-14)
    The purpose of this contribution is to give an overview of the role of System Dynamics in the context of the evolution of the systems movement. "Systems movement"--often referred to briefly as "systemics"--is a broad term, which takes account of the fact that there is no one systems approach, but a range of different ones. Indeed, the development of the System Dynamics methodology, and the worldwide community that applies SD to the modeling and simulation in the most different contexts, suggest it is a "systems approach" on its own. Nevertheless, taking "System Dynamics" as the (one and only) synonym for "systemic thinking" would go too far, as there are other approaches to systemic thinking as well as a variety of systems theories and methodologies, which - to a certain extent - are complementary to SD. The purpose of this article implies working out the actual and potential relationships between System Dynamics and the other strands of the systems movement. An overview on the temporal sequence of some milestones in the evolution of the Systems Approach in general and System Dynamics in particular is given in the Appendix. Elaborating on each one of the sources and dates quoted therein would reach beyond the possibilities of this paper.
