PublicationToward a model of effective monitoring of IT application development and maintenance suppliers in multisourced environmentsMany international corporations are now adopting multisourcing approaches to information technology (IT). Multisourcing is described as the disciplined provision and blending of services from multiple suppliers both outside the company and within the company. This approach to meeting business goals is primarily concerned with the relationship between the client organization and the multiple suppliers. To date, aspects relating to performance measurement and governance have scarcely been covered in the literature, and established IT frameworks such as control objectives for information and related technology (COBIT) provide imprecise approaches for monitoring suppliers. In this study, we intend to sharpen the existing understanding of how corporations manage and monitor suppliers in a multisourced environment and of why specific key performance indicators (KPIs) are utilized. We provide insights using a real-life example of the monitoring of IT application development and maintenance (IT ADM) suppliers and suggest monitoring dimensions based on a cross-case analysis. Based on inter-rater reliability, we further derive a minimum set of corresponding IT ADM KPIs. This study is expected to help corporations facing similar challenges by providing a set of essential KPIs to monitor IT ADM suppliers.Type: journal articleJournal: International Journal of Accounting Information Systems (IJAIS)Volume: 14Issue: 3

PublicationA Governance Mechanisms Framework for Multisourcing in Business Groups(IGI Publishing, 2011-12-01)Implementing multisourcing in business groups is challenging, and linear-extension of dyadic information technology (IT) outsourcing literature is insufficient to cope with multisourcing specifics. By pursuing design science research (DSR) as the research orientation and utilizing expert interviews, action research and case studies as individual research methods, the authors propose a multisourcing maturity model as an IT governance mechanism. This article contributes in four areas: first, it derives requirements for IT governance mechanisms intended to support the implementation of multisourcing in business groups; second, it identifies the research gap by analyzing current concepts; third, it develops a maturity model; and fourth, it demonstrates the application of the model with two real-life case examples of leading financial services providers. Moreover, the maturity model provides practical guidance for coping with the challenges of implementing multisourcing by identifying the required capabilities, illustrates a desired evolution path to effectively and efficiently utilize multisourcing, and can be employed for steering multisourcing in business groups.Type: journal articleJournal: International Journal of IT/Business Alignment and Governance (IJITBAG)Volume: 2Issue: 2

PublicationA Multisourcing Maturity Model as an IT Governance Mechanism for Business Group(IGI Publishing, 2011-12-01)Many large corporations are adopting multisourcing strategies. Multisourcing is described as the blending of services from multiple company-internal and external suppliers in the pursuit of business goals. To date, governance-related aspects in terms of multisourcing have been scarcely covered in the academic literature. With this research study, the authors examine how business groups utilize governance mechanisms in a multi-sourced IT environment. This article contributes to the body of knowledge in three ways. First, it describes established IT governance mechanisms; second, it presents insights into three real-life examples of IT governance mechanisms at leading international insurance companies; and third, it extends current literature toward multisourcing in a group context by proposing and applying a framework of IT governance mechanisms targeting the different relationships of multisourcing in business groups. In addition, this research is useful for corporations facing similar challenges.Type: journal articleJournal: International Journal of IT/Business Alignment and Governance (IJITBAG)Volume: 2Issue: 2

PublicationComparing IT Supplier Selection Criteria in Single- Versus Multi-Sourcing Constellations: An Empirical Study(AIS Association for Information Systems, 2012-08-09)
;Schoeni, Manuel JoergAlthough information technology (IT) outsourcing is widely applied by companies and has been intensively researched, therehas been little scientific research on the differences in single- versus multi-sourcing constellations. Furthermore, linearextension of single-sourcing to multi-sourcing is limited, despite the fact that companies utilize multi-sourcing morefrequently in recent times. This empirical research aims to increase the understanding of differences in single- versus multisourcingconstellations based on the relevance of IT supplier selection criteria for application development and maintenanceas well as infrastructure services. Based on a literature review, an empirical survey of sourcing professionals was conducted.Combined inferential and descriptive statistical analysis indicates a significant difference of the relevance of various ITsupplier selection criteria in single- versus multi-sourcing constellations. The study reveals that criteria related to supplierriskare more relevant in single-sourcing, while criteria related to price are dominant in multi-sourcing constellations.Type: conference paper -
PublicationGlobal IT Multisourcing: Objectives, Challenges and Requirements in Multinational Insurance Companies(Association for Information Systems, 2012-07-14)In recent times, information technology (IT) multisourcing has emerged as a key strategy in the field of IT outsourcing. Most of the current scholarly and practitioner-related literature acknowledges the importance of multisourcing, but linear extensions of the dyadic client-vendor relationship are insufficient to capture its nuances. Multinational financial services providers (such as banks and insurance companies) have been pioneers in the field of IT outsourcing. However, there is a lack of experience-based research about the implementation of global IT multisourcing. In this article we present findings from a cross-case study investigating the implementation of global IT multisourcing in four leading insurance companies. First, the article presents the objectives of the insurers in pursuing global IT multisourcing. Second, the research reveals challenges the companies are facing in implementing global IT multisourcing. Finally, requirements for implementing IT multisourcing are derived. The insights of these real-life examples extend existing literature on IT outsourcing and provide helpful orientation for organizations that are implementing global IT multisourcing.Type: conference paper

PublicationTowards a Multisourcing Maturity Model as an Instrument of IT Governance at a Multinational Enterprise(IEEE Computer Society, 2011-01-04)Many multinational enterprises are applying multisourcing approaches. Multisourcing is described as the blending of services from multiple internal and external vendors. In the case of one of the worldwide leading financial service providers the implementation of the multisourcing concept at the numerous business entities has been challenging since the group follows a federal IT organization model. By applying action research a multisourcing maturity model has been developed as an IT governance instrument. It is inspired by established maturity models and adapts proven methodologies whilst targeting the specific requirements of multisourcing. Thereby the maturity model provides transparency across all business entities, enables continuous monitoring of the multisourcing implementation progress and allows the provisioning of best-practices to a corporate group. With this article the authors provide insights into a real-life example of developing and implementing a multisourcing strategy and suggest an IT governance instrument for a multinational enterprise.Type: conference paper
