Abstract
The growing interest of sustainability in tourism has been paralleled with the equally accelerating drawbacks of mass tourism. As a result, the search for desirable sustainable tourism development has emerged in theory and practice. Since a compromise is usually made between generally intensive forms of tourism, supported by investors and entrepreneurs and generally restricted forms of tourism, promoted by ecologists, sustainable tourism development has mainly focused on economic and ecological impacts. Tourism, however, also manifests its impacts in the socio-cultural character of a destination. This paper presents a focussed approach for assessing the often neglected socio-cultural impacts of tourism that differs from previous more holistic methodologies. Firstly, a comprehensive framework is postulated and secondly, a categorisation with three levels of priority is applied. Management implications and future research topics are discussed.
