Abstract
Digital twins are transforming industrial value chains, yet their full business potential remains underexplored beyond technological implementation. This study shifts the focus from technology adoption to value creation, examining the intrinsic characteristics that drive digital twin impact, the environmental conditions enabling their deployment, and the key business value drivers across the product and production lifecycle.Using an inductive, qualitative research approach, we analyze 54 expert interviews across manufacturing, technology, and platform-based ecosystems. Our findings reveal three core digital twin characteristics, five critical environmental enablers, and four dominant business value drivers-innovation, efficiency, effectiveness, and exploitation-each shaping distinct value areas within industrial operations. This study contributes to the literature by reframing digital twins as strategic assets rather than operational tools, highlighting their role in multi-stakeholder industrial ecosystems. It provides a structured framework for digital twin adoption, offering actionable insights for organizations seeking scalable, interoperable, and economically viable solutions. By bridging theoretical insights with managerial relevance, our research strengthens the foundation for digital twin-driven business transformation and long-term value generation in industrial environments.
