Abstract
Do government induced internet shutdowns have a negative impact on foreign direct investment (FDI)
inflows? Internet shutdowns are on the rise and have been used by governments to limit
communication and suppress political dissent. While recent research in political science has started to
investigate topics around internet shutdowns, the broader economic consequences are less widely
understood. Using an econometric panel data approach this study analyses the effect of internet
shutdowns on the flow of inward FDI for a set of 57 countries over the period 2016-2022.
