Description
The aim of this research project is to examine the potential trade-off between formal and informal management controls, and the joint impact that control combinations have on outcomes related to new product development (NPD) teams. Based on an organisational control perspective, we argue that NPD projects' strategic priorities have a vital influence on the selection of formal and informal management controls. Management controls, in turn, are assumed to effect NPD teams' behavioural outcome as well as their performance. Findings on this context can help to reveal which management controls are most appropriate regarding the NPD projects' strategic priorities. Furthermore, synergies between different controls are assumed to make others redundant, and therefore represent a trade-off. This knowledge can save time and money spent on the implementation of controls that may not be necessary in the respective NPD project.
