Description
The decoupling of economic growth and the growth of transport represents a major objective within the European transport policy. The major contributor to transport growth has to be seen in the increased transport intensity of value creation. On the supply side, the non-optimal utilisation of transport capacities and modes contributes to the growth of transport, for example in the lack of acceptance of intermodal transport. This has been a major issue for policy makers for many years. In order to get a better understanding of the interrelation between logistics decisions and transport demand, the European Commission (EC) supported a number of research projects, such as SULOGTRA, EUTRALOG and PROTRANS. As a result, substantial scientific evidence has been produced. However, to achieve the EC´s objectives, these findings must be translated into the daily operations of shippers and logistics service providers. To proactively encourage the adoption of such practices, an international project consortium has been formed in order to create a platform for the continuous exchange and dissemination of logistics best practices. The consortium consists of experts with a relevant research reputation, experience of the aforementioned research activities, as well as expertise in the transfer of knowledge to all managerial levels within business. The consortium will establish and support an independent institutional platform addressing all stakeholders of logistics and transport in its set-up phase and during the initial period of dissemination. This includes all relevant activities from dissemination strategy development through content provision to the preparation of dedicated awards, conferences and workshops. Moreover, the consortium will form a strategy for the financial independence and the continued development of the platform on completion of the project. As a result, the platform will operate as an acknowledged and established institution that is both self-funding and self-improving thereafter.

PublicationSustainable Supply Chain Management : Practical Ideas for Moving Towards Best Practice(Springer, 2011)
;Cetinkaya, Balkan ;Cuthbertson, Richard ;Ewer, Graham ;Piotrowicz, WojciechTyssen, ChristophThis book focuses on the need to develop sustainable supply chains - economically, environmentally and socially. This book is not about a wish list of impractical choices, but the reality of decisions faced by all those involved in supply chain management today. Our definition of sustainable supply chains is not restricted to so-called "green" supply chains, but recognises that in order to be truly sustainable, supply chains must operate within a realistic financial structure, as well as contribute value to our society. Supply chains are not sustainable unless they are realistically funded and valued. Thus, a real definition of sustainable supply chain management must take account of all relevant economic, social and environmental issues. This book contains examples from a wide range of real-life case studies, and synthesizes the learnings from these many different situations to provide the fundamental building blocks at the centre of successful logistics and supply chain managementType: book -

PublicationManaging Within Your Organization(Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg, 2011)
;Tyssen, Christoph ;Cuthbertson, Richard ;Cetinkaya, Balkan ;Ewer, Graham ;Piotrowicz, WojciechTyssen, ChristophAfter dealing with issues of strategy and performance in the context of sustainable SCM in general, in the preceding two chapters, we will now shed some light on the best practice of those relevant management fields of sustainable SCM, which are typically prone to be more or less under direct influence of the companies involved in a supply chain. Since the usual sphere of direct managerial influence lies within the boundaries of a company, we intentionally labelled this chapter "under your control - managing inside your organisation"Type: book section
