PublicationDeveloping intercultural competences in preservice teacher education for the upper secondary level( 2016-07-04)Recently there has been a growing socio-cultural and ethnic heterogeneity of students in classes of commercial vocational schools in Switzerland. This has had an impact on various aspects of school life, e.g. classroom management, interaction between students and teachers. Currently, however, intercultural competences are not self-evident in the pedagogical professionalism of teachers. In particular in preservice teacher education for higher levels of education (vocational training, after compulsory schooling) the topic is still largely ignored. The aim of the larger project is to design a learning environment for the promotion of intercultural competences of preservice teachers in the degree program in Business Education at the University of St.Gallen. Hereby the project wants to investigate what the guiding principles are for designing a didactic-methodological learning concept in order to promote intercultural competences in this context. The poster adresses in particular the different beliefs preservice teachers have about working with students from different cultural and ethnical groups as they influence strongly the outcome and effects of multicultural learning activities.

PublicationFörderung interkultureller Lehrkompetenz : didaktische Gestaltungsprinzipien in der Lehrerinnen- und Lehrerbildung für die Sekundarstufe IITeachers need intercultural teaching skills to cope with the increasing ethnic-cultural heterogeneity of learners in the classroom. In the context of the present research work, a curriculum for the promotion of intercultural teaching competence is developed for the Pre-service teacher education at the University of St. Gallen, in which future teachers for business administration, economics and law are trained. Based on the paradigm of design-based research, the aim of the work is to develop an innovative practical solution on the one hand, and on the other hand to derive design principles that offer guidelines for the methodological design of intercultural teaching concepts in a broader educational context. The starting point of the work is an in-depth discussion of the research literature on the importance of ethnic-cultural heterogeneity for the secondary II education level by identifying pedagogical fields of action that require the teachers to have specific intercultural teaching competences. Afterwards the goal construct 'Intercultural teaching competence' is further analyzed and operationalized for the development of an intercultural teaching arrangement. In addition, design assumptions are derived from Bennett's development model of intercultural sensitivity as well as further insights gained from theoretical and empirical studies, which guide the methodological-didactic design of intercultural teaching arrangements. Taking into account the specific contextual conditions, a prototype of the intercultural teaching arrangement is developed and tested in two Pre-service teacher education courses at the University of St. Gallen. The evaluation methods comprise a multitude of qualitative and quantitative instruments and allow the further development of the teaching arrangement as well as an evaluation of the usefulness and relevance of the individual design principles.Type: doctoral thesis
