Mapping and Analysis of Student-Centred Learning and Teaching Practices: Usable Knowledge to Support More Inclusive, High-Quality Higher Education
Type
consulting project
Description
This report explores student-centred learning and teaching (SCLT) as a comprehensive approach to enhancing quality and inclusiveness in European higher education. Grounded in the concept of student agency, SCLT empowers students to actively shape their learning journeys. The study maps impactful SCLT practices, many drawn from European University Alliances and EU-funded projects, and presents them through case studies. It also introduces a self-assessment tool for institutions to evaluate their own SCLT ecosystems based on ten interrelated elements, including pedagogy, flexible learning paths, support structures, and inclusive learning environments. Additionally, the report synthesizes current research to contextualize SCLT’s effectiveness and implementation barriers. While many institutions have adopted fragments of SCLT, full integration remains limited. Structural obstacles, such as traditional teaching norms, heavy workloads, and insufficient institutional support, hinder progress. The report concludes that a shared policy framework and stronger stakeholder engagement are essential to mainstream SCLT and ensure equitable, transformative learning experiences across Europe.
