A practical ethics of care: Tinkering with different ‘goods’ in residential nursing homes

Abstract (De)
In this paper we argue that ‘good care’ in residential nursing homes is a matter of tinkering between different goods that are inherent to different care practices. While some of these care practices may be informed by a ‘professional logic of care’ that aims for justice and non-maleficence in the professional treatment of residents, other practices are inspired by a ‘relational logic of care’ that frames care practices as embedded in an ongoing process among multiple actors and thereby re-imagines what may qualify as a care practice in residential facilities. Rather than favoring one care logic over the other, as some scholars have done, this paper – based on an ethnographic field study at a residential nursing home – illustrates how the quality of care is always the outcome of intricate negotiations between different care practices. These negotiations call for the theoretical conceptualization and everyday enactment of a ‘practical ethics of care’, an ethics which makes no a priori judgements of what may be considered as good or bad care, but instead calls for situational, momentary judgements that may shift across different circumstances.
