Peter Ulrich made his Masters Degree in Economic and Social Sciences (lic.rer.pol.) in 1971 at the University of Fribourg and his Doctoral Degree (Dr.rer.pol.) in 1976 at the University of Basel where he was a research associate at the Institute for Business Administration from 192 to 1976.  From 1976 to 1979 and again 1982 to 1984 he worked as a full-time management consultant in Zurich.  From 1979 to 1982, he was a postdoctoral scholar of the Swiss National Science Foundation.  In 1986, his habilitation thesis for a venia legendi in ”economic sciences and their philosophical foundations” was accepted at the University of Witten-Herdecke, Germany.
Professional Career

1987-2009 Chair for Economic and Business Ethics at the University of St Gallen; 1989 founder and until 2015 director of the Institute for Business Ethics.

1984-87 Full Professor for Business Administration, University of Wuppertal (Germany).

1976-79 and 1982-84 fulltime management consultant (Ernst & Young, Zurich).

Founder of the St. Gallen approach of Integrative Economic Ethics. The standard work "Integrative Wirtschaftsethik" (1st ed. 1997) is available in a revised5th German edition (Bern: Haupt, 2016) as well as in an English translation with the title "Integrative Economic Ethics: Foundations of a Civilized Market Economy" (Cambridge University Press, 2008; paperback ed. 2010); moreover in a Spanish edition "Ética Económica Integrativa: Fundamentos de una economía al servicio de la vida" (Editorial Abya-Yala, Quito, Ecuador 2008) and in a partial Russian translation (2004).


A careful review of "Integrative Economic Ethics" that explains the specific differences compared to the anglosaxon Business Ethics is offered by Jeffery Smith in Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews and also in the Business Ethics Quarterly (2013), pp. 151-154. An excellent in-depth outline is given by Alexander Lorch & Thomas Beschorner: "Integrative Economic Ethics: concept and critique", in: The  Routledge Companion to Business Ethics (eds. E. Heath, B. Kadis & A. Marcoux), London/New York: Routledge 2018, pp. 204-219.  

An easily readable introduction is offered in the book (in German language): "Zivilisierte Marktwirtschaft - Eine wirtschaftsethische Orientierung", new edition (Haupt, 2010. A Korean edition has also been published in Seoul (ByBooks, 2010).
