Supply chains today face a conundrum. Focusing on efficiency for years, it became clear in the wake of COVID-19 and Russian war at the latest that this is insufficient. More supply chain resilience is needed to remain competitive and overcome disruptions in a complex, rapidly changing world. Thirdly, ecological sustainability is all-present and key for firms and Switzerland, e.g., to reach climate goals. As supply chains are the main lever for becoming green, they are increasingly under society's attention. However, it is not possible to consider and optimize the three targets of efficiency, resilience, and ecological sustainability separately, as they create areas of tension. How to solve this conundrum and purposefully evolve supply chains to the next level? This conflict has been the foundation of nature ever since. Hence bionics and biologization - transferring phenomena from nature to technology and applying biological science in business provide a remedy. We introduce this- innovative approach to supply chains and take up the Ulanowicz model from biology. Applying biologization we call the integration of efficiency, resilience, and ecological sustainability supply chain viability (SCV) - the next evolutionary step. Viable supply chains increase the competitiveness of firms and Switzerland alike by helping to become green, crisis-proof, and enhance the security of supply. We prepare supply chains for this evolution by the following innovation contributions:
1.Reference model on purposeful supply chain evolution: Structure the viability conundrum by defining its components, including their interrelations, multi-stakeholder perspectives, and metrics.
2.Analysis of current state in CH: Enable organizations to assess their current evolution status and derive a strategy set to achieve it.
3.Pathways for purposeful evolution: Conceptualize and develop a dashboard and workshop guide to enable the purposeful evolution of supply chains.
