Description
There are three goals: (1) measuring the difference in propensity to innovate in the US vs. European space sectors, and identifying the macro-forces explaining potential differences; (2) identifying the challenges and constraints of the members of the European space ecosystem; and (3) providing policy recommendations to ESA and the network of ESA BICs to stimulate innovation.
The activity consists in: (1) documentary macro-level innovation economic research applying a framework of indicators (benchmarking European NewSpace against US case); (2) micro-level data gathering via workshops, interviews, and a survey. We then (3) make policy recommendations for how ESA (European Space Agency) can boost NewSpace innovation, and in particular, how can ESA BICs (Business Incubation Centres) support this transformation.
HSG leads a consortium of universities: Rotterdam School of Management, and the Nova School of Business and Economics. EPFL's Prof. Foray is also a key figure, though also fellow at HSG CFAC. Prof. Gabriele Pellegrino of the Catholic University of Milan also contributes.
