Research on IIoT platforms attributes failure to discrete factors such as governance misalignment or technological complexity and rarely considers how failure unfolds. This article adopts a structuration theory perspective to examine IIoT platform failure as a path-dependent process. Through a seven-year longitudinal case study of Alpha, a global industrial manufacturer, we identify four structuration mechanisms—structural embeddedness, misalignment, reproduction, and reversion—that progressively constrain platform scalability. Our findings reveal that failure is not a singular event but an emergent outcome shaped by recursive interactions between architecture, governance, and market structures, as well as strategic actions. We contribute to platform governance research by showing that IIoT platforms inherit, rather than impose, governance structures, making it crucial for firms to actively reshape contracting dependencies rather than replicating existing structures. Based on these insights, we provide recommendations for firms to design governance frameworks that foster openness, modularity, and ecosystem scalability from the outset. Item type:Publication, Logic hybridization in enterprise platforms: Reconfiguring architecture and governance for generative AIEnterprise platforms have historically relied on a logic of determinacy to ensure predictable, reproducible, and auditable system behavior through mutually reinforcing architecture and governance mechanisms. However, generative AI (GenAI) introduces a conflicting logic of probabilistic inference that destabilizes these mechanisms by generating variable, context-dependent, and non-deterministic outputs. As platform owners increasingly integrate GenAI into enterprise platforms, this study draws on assemblage theory and an in-depth case study of Salesforce to examine how enterprise platform owners reconfigure architecture and governance to manage the coexistence of deterministic and probabilistic logics. We develop a process model of logic hybridization that explains how platform owners restore system-level stability while accommodating and regulating probabilistic components. Specifically, we identify four complementary mediation mechanisms, that is, dependency mediation, service mediation, interaction-centric control, and dynamic certification and monitoring, through which platform owners reconfigure architectural and governance arrangements. We further theorize that logic hybridization gives rise to a hybrid platform logic characterized by three emergent properties: boundary fluidity, trust mediation, and expanded generativity. This study contributes to research on enterprise platforms and enterprise system evolution by identifying incompatible system behavior as a new source of platform destabilization, extending theories of platform evolution beyond structural change, and theorizing how deterministic and probabilistic logics coexist under mediated conditions in enterprise platforms.Type:journal articleJournal:Journal of Information Technology - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, From questions to insights: how domain-specific semantics boost LLM access to touristic real-time occupancy data(2026-06) ;Stefan Neubig ;Linus Göhl ;Rahul Radhakrishnan ;Matthias WeirichTimely access to occupancy data, combining real‑time measurements and short‑term predictions, is critical for tourism destinations to enhance visitor experiences and manage overcrowding. While this data is increasingly collected, it remains stored in complex databases that are challenging to access flexibly, particularly for large language models (LLMs), which cannot query structured sources directly. LLMs are increasingly valuable in smart tourism, offering conversational access to digital services that support both guests and staff. This paper evaluates the potential of semantic approaches to improve LLM-based access to complex occupancy databases, proposing a zero-shot prompt approach and a semantic agent that iteratively corrects queries until they execute successfully. Both rely on a multi-level tourism occupancy ontology, driving a knowledge graph that captures multiple perspectives on occupancy data, both measured and predicted, and enriched with metadata such as provenance. Evaluated on 19 realistic tourism questions, the agent achieves 42% accuracy and the simpler pipeline 37%, outperforming the evaluated leading text-to-SQL systems while reducing database load and cost. Our findings indicate that semantic guidance improves accuracy and stability in LLM-based access to structured tourism data. Theoretically, this clarifies the role of semantic abstraction, natural-language annotations, input sensitivity, and agentic behavior in query generation. While bibliometric indicators remain prevalent, they capture only a fraction of the value Information Systems research generates for organizations, policy, and society. This panel report documents the outcomes of a structured workshop held at the ERCIS Annual Workshop 2025 in St. Gallen, Switzerland, in which 55 Information Systems scholars from across the globe collectively reflected on the nature, mechanisms, and future directions of research impact. Drawing on a World Café format with three thematic breakout sessions – covering past experiences of impact generation, current process practices, and forward-looking aspirations – the workshop surfaced rich, practitioner-grounded insights. Synthesizing these insights, we develop a research impact framework that maps six core impact themes – problem relevance & societal value, stakeholder engagement & co-creation, credible actionability, adaptiveness & learning, ethics & risk awareness, and sustainability & longevity – against the four phases of Benbya et al. (2026) impact framework: planning, delivering, measuring, and communicating. The matrix serves as a practical self-assessment tool for Information Systems researchers seeking to design more impactful research. Item type:Publication, Navigating Flexibility and Standardisation in Low‐Code/No‐Code DevelopmentLow-code/no-code (LCNC) platforms, such as ServiceNow and Microsoft Power Platform, enable employees without formal IT training to build applications and automate workflows, thus driving agility and reducing dependence on traditional IT teams. However, LCNC platforms also pose a persistent challenge for organisations: while they offer flexibility and freedom by enabling decentralised development, they also require standardisation and control to manage risks that can be exacerbated by these platforms, such as shadow IT and technical debt. Striking the right balance is difficult—too much flexibility can compromise stability, while too much standardisation can stifle the autonomy and creativity that make LCNC platforms valuable in the first place. This study explores flexibility–standardisation tensions in LCNC development through an investigation of two multinational technology firms with differing LCNC maturity levels, both using ServiceNow. Drawing from 57 interviews, we identify three types of flexibility-standardisation tensions shaped by three key elements of LCNC development: the platform itself, the people using the platform and the organisational processes targeted for improvement. We derive six guidelines used to navigate flexibility–standardisation tensions and demonstrate how these are applied across different stages of LCNC maturity. Building on these insights, we provide concrete, context-sensitive recommendations to help organisations adapt the guidelines to their specific environments. We conclude with forward-looking reflections on how firms can dynamically make sense of these tensions as LCNC platforms and practices evolve. However, many firms struggle to use data as an integral part of their information systems (IS) and business strategies to innovate their business model and increase business value. As approaches for data-based value creation are still nascent or in development, conceptual work reflecting the diversity of data-based value-creation strategies within organizational settings is scarce. Based on a sample of 75 ventures, we develop a data strategy taxonomy to manifest the key characteristics of data-based strategy-making. We use the taxonomy and conduct a cluster analysis to derive four strategic types of data-based value creation: data for efficiency, data for complements, data for niche innovations, and data for attention and market control. Based on an evaluation of 12 firms where we conducted interviews, the four strategic types of data-based value creation provide a more thorough understanding of how organizations strategically integrate data into their business and IS strategy. The “data for attention and market control” strategic type extends classic findings on IS and business strategies arising from the pervasive market power and leadership position derived from data. Grounded in theories of decentralized governance, we examine how these ecosystems evolve from a conceptual decentralized framework to a more centralized operational reality as they mature. Employing an exploratory case study of four data ecosystems, based on 25 interviews and archival data, we investigate the transition within data ecosystems from decentralized emergence to the governance trade-offs necessitated by their expansion and increased complexity. Our findings depict a spectrum of governance adaptations: while some ecosystems develop formal structures that lean towards centralization to facilitate scaling, others maintain their foundational decentralized approach through self-regulation and technology-driven solutions. Our results contribute to the theoretical understanding of the dynamic governance within data ecosystems, revealing the processual nuances of balancing decentralization with operational centralization. In the information systems (IS) domain, access to real-life information technology (IT) is required. Nevertheless, it often needs more than access, such as contract processing, suitable curricula, or lecturer training. In many cases, these activities are managed bilaterally between an educational institution and a company. The resulting partnerships, however, bear the risk of dispersing as soon as strategic, technological, or staffing conditions change. To address this issue, we examine the ecosystemic approach toward academic-industry partnerships. The ecosystemic approach applies the concept of competence centers as independent intermediary hubs. Using the SAP University Alliances (SAP UA) program as an example of the ecosystemic approach, we iteratively develop an e3 value model of the ecosystem by interviewing its stakeholders and validating the resulting model at a conference with the SAP UA community. Further, we develop six role concepts and respective requirement dimensions that facilitate effective knowledge exchange in IT companies’ academic ecosystems. Our contributions provide insights into how such an ecosystem can be structured and critically assess application fields by considering the continuous changes affecting the IS education community. Item type:Publication, The role of information systems in emergency department decision-making—a literature review(2024) ;Cornelius Born ;Romy Schwarz ;Timo Phillip Böttcher; Helmut KrcmarObjectives Healthcare providers employ heuristic and analytical decision-making to navigate the high-stakes environment of the emergency department (ED). Despite the increasing integration of information systems (ISs), research on their efficacy is conflicting. Drawing on related fields, we investigate how timing and mode of delivery influence IS effectiveness. Our objective is to reconcile previous contradictory findings, shedding light on optimal IS design in the ED. Materials and methods We conducted a systematic review following PRISMA across PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. We coded the ISs’ timing as heuristic or analytical, their mode of delivery as active for automatic alerts and passive when requiring user-initiated information retrieval, and their effect on process, economic, and clinical outcomes. Results Our analysis included 83 studies. During early heuristic decision-making, most active interventions were ineffective, while passive interventions generally improved outcomes. In the analytical phase, the effects were reversed. Passive interventions that facilitate information extraction consistently improved outcomes. Discussion Our findings suggest that the effectiveness of active interventions negatively correlates with the amount of information received during delivery. During early heuristic decision-making, when information overload is high, physicians are unresponsive to alerts and proactively consult passive resources. In the later analytical phases, physicians show increased receptivity to alerts due to decreased diagnostic uncertainty and information quantity. Interventions that limit information lead to positive outcomes, supporting our interpretation. Item type:Publication, Self-Organization and Governance in Digital Platform Ecosystems: An Information Ecology Approach(MIS Quarterly, 2024-08) ;Engert, Martin; ;Maruping, Likoebe ;Thatcher, JasonKrcmar, HelmutThis research investigates the interplay of top-down control and bottom-up self-organization within Digital Platform Ecosystems (DPEs), focusing on the formation and management of complementor coalitions. Although these coalitions can increase a DPE's generativity, they can also threaten its integrity. We investigate this tension by employing Information Ecology (IE) theory, which allows us to examine complementor coalitions as holons that navigate between self-assertiveness and integration within the structural hierarchies of DPEs. Utilizing an inductive, embedded case study approach, we analyze the interplay between top-down control exerted by platform owners and the bottom-up self-organization of complementors in two enterprise software platform ecosystems. Our findings identify three distinct interaction modes-mandated, supported, and autonomous self-organization-each presenting hierarchical trade-offs between platform owner control and complementor autonomy. Our findings extend the prevalent owner-centric theory of platform governance by highlighting the significant impact of bottom-up self-organization on the governance and evolution of DPEs. We propose an integrated theory that accommodates these new dynamics, suggesting soft power as an effective governance mechanism.
