Item type:Publication, Battery Electric Vehicles in Shared Mobility Services -Analysing Drivers and Barriers to Understand Restrained Consumer Demand(2024-05-08)Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and shared mobility services are potential solutions for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to combat climate change. However, consumer demand for BEVs, whether purchased privately or used for shared mobility, is restrained. While the drivers and barriers for BEVs in the context of private ownership have been analysed to some extent, there has been little research in shared mobility contexts such as carsharing and car rental. The present paper attempts to fill this gap by investigating whether consumer drivers and barriers differ for shared mobility use cases compared to ownership. This is done by surveying customers of a global carsharing and car rental company. A total of 1,888 customers of the carsharing and rental business models in Germany were surveyed in two independent online surveys with closed and open-ended questions. The findings indicate that environmental concerns are the primary driver for BEV bookings. The main barriers are limited range, charging infrastructure, and booking costs of BEVs. These results are similar to those for the ownership context. It appears that consumers do not distinguish between the different use cases, suggesting that there are prejudices against BEVs regardless of the use case. Item type:Publication, Knowledge, Information or Configuration - An Analysis of Consumer Powertrain Choice in Germany(2024-05-08); Linke, JannisThe uptake of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) is among the measures to decrease greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the global transport sector. However, the overall demand for BEVs is limited. Insufficient research has focused on the influence of BEV knowledge on consumer powertrain choice and how information on BEVs affects consumer decisions. Furthermore, research examining the influence of BEV knowledge and information on product configuration is scarce. This article examines these issues through a survey of 746 participants in Germany who were interested in buying a new car within the next 3 years. The results suggested that with increasing consumer knowledge of BEVs, the importance of certain product attributes increases. In addition, having BEV-related information does not necessarily promote BEV uptake, as also partly reflected in product configuration. Instead, emotions and habits appear to play important roles in powertrain choice. To minimise GHG emissions from the transport sector by accelerating the uptake of BEVs, manufacturers and policymakers should therefore proactively address consumers' experiences, habits and emotions regarding internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs).Type:working paper
