Road Towards a European Degree: Identifying Opportunities and Investigating the Impact and Feasibility of Different Approaches

Type
consulting project
Description
This study aimed to explore how the concept of a possible joint European Degree could be implemented, including an assessment of the impact and feasibility of different approaches. Perceived benefits of a possible joint European Degree include an increased number of joint programmes; increased joint delivery of innovative and transformative education; the easier delivery of transnational higher education; and a number of other advantages, both at EU level and for students. The analysis involved desk research, interviews, surveys, case studies, workshops, and an impact and feasibility assessment. The study elaborates two main options for a possible joint European Degree: a label awarded to joint study programmes and a joint degree based on common European criteria. Based on the evidence collected, the most feasible approach proposed is a stepby-step one, beginning with the implementation of a label, with a view towards the gradual and smooth implementation of the possible widespread availability of joint degrees based on common European criteria. The pilot for a joint European Degree label through Erasmus+ funding in 2022 will explore the most feasible models and test the cocreated European criteria in practice, helping to pave the way towards the wider availability of such a label and the possibility of joint degrees based on such common European criteria, which would be delivered in line with National Qualifications Frameworks.
