Description
Nemesis is a European research and innovation project that addresses land degradation and desertification in the Mediterranean by strengthening soil health through participatory, place-based approaches. The project establishes a network of interconnected Living Labs across diverse Mediterranean regions, where local communities, land managers, researchers, policymakers, and civil society actors collaboratively co-design, test, and scale sustainable land-use and soil management solutions. Nemesis integrates ecological, technological, and socio-economic perspectives to develop regenerative practices that enhance soil fertility, biodiversity, water retention, and climate resilience while remaining economically viable and socially acceptable. A strong emphasis is placed on social innovation, stakeholder empowerment, and knowledge co-creation, supported by digital tools, monitoring systems, and learning platforms that facilitate data-driven decision-making and mutual learning across regions. By linking local experimentation with broader policy and governance frameworks, Nemesis contributes to the objectives of the EU Soil Mission and provides transferable models for sustainable land stewardship, fostering long-term resilience of Mediterranean landscapes and communities in the face of climate change and environmental pressures.
