Item type:Publication, Alpes Bank’s journey to creating value at scale with generative AIThis teaching case portrays Alpes Bank, a Swiss universal bank whose branch-centric, premium-service model is challenged by generative AI (GenAI). This teaching case follows Tamara Maurer’s board mandate to deliver a “no-regret” GenAI pilot within one quarter. After evaluating several GenAI use cases, Tamara Maurer’s team builds a retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) email assistant with an external partner (i.e., AILabs). The GenAI pilot surfaces several unexpected tensions. Nonetheless, during a limited rollout, the GenAI email assistant reduces handling time for routine inquiries by 21%. Part B focuses on laying the foundation for scaling GenAI use cases. Tamara Maurer must now help Alpes Bank move from a special-project setup to an organizational design and governance process that supports enterprise-wide scaling. Item type:Publication, Agency Configurations in Generative AI Ideation: How Textual and Visual Idea Concretizations Shape Idea Creativity and Ideator Effort(2026-06-19); ; ;Clegg, Melanie; Ideators increasingly turn to generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) to improve the creativity of their ideas and reduce the cognitive effort required to refine them. This collaboration is based on finegrained configurations of human-AI agency that allow for partial automation and augmentation of the creative-ideation process. In this study, we examine how representational differences in AI-generated inputs into human ideation in the form of textual and visual concretizations influence the creativity of the jointly produced ideas and the effort ideators must expend. These AI-generated concretizations transform initial raw ideas into more mature representations that ideators can inspect, interpret, and evaluate. In an online experiment, we found that AI-generated textual concretizations improved idea creativity by 18% relative to AI-generated visual concretizations but required 30% greater effort from ideators. This effect was most pronounced for more mature ideas (i.e., specific and actionable). For very immature ideas, visual concretizations enhanced idea creativity without increased effort. We explain these differences through different configurations of human-AI agency in ideation. Textual concretizations correspond to augmentation: GenAI produces coherent textual concretizations that ideators must interpret and complete with their imagination. The material agency of GenAI is matched by human agency, increasing idea creativity but requiring greater effort. As ideas mature, richer textual concretizations provide greater substance for creative elaboration, boosting both idea creativity and ideator effort. In contrast, the use of visual concretizations follows an automation logic. GenAI exerts material agency by autonomously specifying all required details for a visual concretization. While this can boost creativity for very immature ideas by offering stimulating details for creative exploration, these details become constraining as ideas mature. This constrains human agency and ideators’ abilities to integrate novel elements into ideation. Item type:Publication, Next-generation IS research methods – towards a better understanding of complex and dynamic phenomena … and generative AI as the elephant in the roomEmerging phenomena like the increasing volume and variety of available data, machine learning techniques, and, most recently, Generative AI are reshaping our research practices, affording new research methods for testing and developing theory. In this editorial, we discuss our two major observations from running the ‘Next-generation IS Research Methods’ Special Issue: (1) the need for research methods that enhance our understanding of complex and dynamic phenomena and (2) Generative AI as (potential) productivity enhancer. We compile these observations into an organizing framework and discuss possibilities for applying Generative AI in the fields of qualitative, quantitative, and engaged research. It compares the effect of hedonic signals across reward-, equity-, and donation based crowdfunding platforms by combining archival data from 18 platforms and a large scale panel of 64 experts that rate the strength of hedonic signals in 108 crowdfunding projects. Through the application of mixed linear modeling, the findings indicate a positive influence of stronger hedonic signals on funding performance. However, there are substantial differences across platform types. Increasing the strength of hedonic signals by one standard deviation increases funding performance by 28.9% on reward platforms, while there are no systematic effects on equity and donation platforms.
