    Governance for intelligent organizations: a cybernetic contribution

    Purpose – This paper aims to revisit the viable system model (VSM) discussing it from both the theoreticaland the empirical standpoints, and ascertaining its relevance for organizational governance. Design/methodology/approach – A combination of theoretical and empirical components is used: introduction to theory and critique on the one hand; case studies and a large sample empirical study on the other. Findings – The VSM has proved to be a powerful means of governance for organizations in turbulent times. It conveys a durable, reliable knowledge. This has been corroborated in both case studies and a large-scale empirical study. Practical implications – Application of the model under study can activate a huge potential for the improvement of organizations. Originality/value – This contribution tests the VSM in an unseen fashion – qualitatively and quantitatively. The results suggest that a high confidence in the model is justified. It conveys to managers and leaders an unconventional, superior approach to both diagnosis and design of their organizations.

    Systemic design for sustainability

    How can we restore the ecological balance of our planet? The present article is aimed at contributing a structural Framework for such a restoration. In the quest for ecological recovery, cybernetic–systemic approaches are in demand. They specialize in coping with complexity and offer new, transdisciplinary and non-reductionist ways of system design for renewing sustainability. This contribution uses a proven model from organizational cybernetics—the viable system odel—as a frame for sustainable development. The model specifies how the viability of any human or social system can be achieved by means of clearly defined organizational structures. In accord with the logic of recursive organization inherent in the model, a proposal for a structural design aimed at enabling ecological recovery is formulated. That design includes all organizational levels of recursion, from individual to world. The implications of such a novel approach are far-reaching, and the impact powerful.

    The challenge of model complexity: improving the interpretation of large causal models through variety filters

    While large causal models provide detailed insights to the analysts who develop them, General users are often challenged by their omplexity. Commonly, these models overwhelm the cognitive capacities of human beings. The inaccessibility of large causal models is particularly regrettable when they deliver valuable expertise and information that should be shared with other researchers and ractitioners. To address this issue, we propose a set of tools—so-called variety filters—to reduce model complexity and promote the accurate interpretation of their results. These filters encompass interpretive model partitioning, structural model partitioning and algorithmic detection of archetypal structures (ADAS). We demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed variety filters using the World3–2003 Model—a simulation model of remarkable complexity. The filters drastically attenuate the complexity while enhancing the comprehension of the model. Based on our findings, we derive implications for the use of complex models and their interpretation.

    The purpose of this study is to shed light on the chain of causality frommacroeconomic financial policy to the microeconomic investment function. Concretely, we aim to provide an in-depth analysis of the relationships between the monetary policy of central banks, the loan policy of commercial banks, and the investment behavior of firms. We focus on countries that conduct their monetary policy under the inflation-targeting framework. Our empirical analysis with data from Germany, Switzerland and Thailand provides several new insights. First,after controlling for the US monetary policy, the monetary policy in Germany and Thailand appears to influence the banks' lending rate in the short run (i.e. within two months), whereas the monetary policy in Switzerland seems to be ineffective at influencing the banks' lending rate in the short run. Second, our results show that the banks' lending rate has a negative effect on their loans and that this negative effect is weakened by their growth opportunities. Third, we find that the supply of bank loans plays a more pivotal role in determining firms' investment than the lending rate. Last but not least, we document that neither the lending rate nor the loan-to-assets ratio moderates the sensitivity of the firms' investment to growth opportunities.

    A Test of the Viable System Model: Theoretical Claim vs. Empirical Evidence
    The Viable System Model by Stafford Beer embodies a theory about the preconditions of organizational viability. This theory has been discussed extensively by the academics and professionals of organizational cybernetics. The theoretical claim of the Viable System Model (VSM) is bold. It asserts to specify the necessary and sufficient preconditions for the viability of any organization. The empirical evidence, to date, amounts to a substantial corpus of case studies from applications that support the claim of the theory. The present contribution leads beyond the status quo. Its purpose is to test the theory empirically, on the grounds of a broad survey and pertinent quantitative analysis. The available data support the hypotheses and therewith corroborate the theory of the VSM. This implies that the VSM is a reliable orientation device for the diagnosis and design of organizations to strengthen their vitality, resilience, and development potential.

    Towards the algorithmic detection of archetypal structures in system dynamics

    Traditionally, model analysis follows qualitative, heuristic, and trial-and-error-driven approaches for testing dynamic hypotheses. Only recently have other methods like loop dominance Analysis or control theory been proposed for this purpose. We advocate complementing established qualitative heuristics with a quantitative method for model analysis. To that end, we propose two algorithms to detect Wolstenholme's four generic problem archetypes within models. We tested these algorithms using the Maintenance and World Dynamics models. The approach presented in this paper is a first important step towards the identification of system archetypes in system Dynamics and contributes to improving model analysis and diagnosis. Furthermore, our Approach goes beyond diagnosis to eliciting solution archetypes, which foster the design and implementation of effective policies.
