Item type:Publication, Introduction: Strategic entanglements – un/commoning as relational labour of articulating resource modalitiesIn the introduction to this special issue, the authors focus on ‘strategic entanglements’ in the study of the commons, commoning, and accumulation by dispossession. They challenge the recent scholarly focus on projects that understand themselves as outside of capitalisms or other hegemonic economic systems. Instead, Streinzer and Tošić understand social reproduction as a totality of assemblages of actors and relations of capital, labour, property, investment, kinship, state, commons and more at play. In these assemblages, the commons coexist, compromise and collaborate with other forms of resource organisation and property regimes. The special issue zooms in on how actors navigate these entanglements to create, sustain, or undo their own projects and politics. Item type:Publication, ON THE CHALLENGES OF ENGAGEMENT AND DOING ETHNOGRAPHIC RESEARCH IN CONFLICT ZONES(2023); ; Catherine Wanner invited several anthropologists to come together to discuss the challenges of conducting fieldwork in a region ravaged by war. The group consisted of four anthropologists, two who conduct research in Serbia and two in Ukraine. The group discussed the ethical complications that arise for anthropologists whose field site is or was the site of war as well as the responsibilities war creates for anthropologists who respond to the outbreak of armed combat by writing about state-sponsored violence and the process of enduring violence. Sandra King-Savic moderated this conversation, which took place on 7 July 2022 at the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland before a live audience. Item type:Publication, Islands of meaning: Engaged Indifference, Authoritarianism and Class in shifting Europe(s)(2024)Paper short abstract: This paper zooms in on lifeworlds of two heterogenous populations in contemporary Serbia, the educated urban middle-class and new immigrant population from Russia to critically explore the conundrum of indifference, class and authoritarianism. Paper long abstract: This paper zooms in on lifeworlds of two heterogenous populations in contemporary Serbia, the educated urban middle-class and new immigrant population from Russia. The paper's entry point is the urban context of the contemporary Serbian capital, Belgrade, which is currently experiencing a radical demographic transformation due the arrival of (forced) migrants (Ukraine/Russia, Middle East, Africa) and labour populations from the Global South, as well as returnees from western Europe. Furthermore, Belgrade represents an interesting vantage point to explore urban social arenas of long-term and exhausted anti-authoritarian engagements in contemporary (Southeastern) Europe. Rather than reproducing the hegemonic imagined geography of south-east European "peripheries", the paper explores transformations of the Serbian capital as exemplifying the shifting nature of Europe as a locus of imigration and „good life". The two mentioned populations and a comparative assessment of their reasonings and practices are especially interesting for several reasons. They both share a privileged position under conditions of surviving authoritarian regimes, and can often afford to encounter the hardships of every-day life under authoritarianism with partial indifference and engage when seen as meaningful. At the same time there is a „common sense" claim to themselves represent the „natural" driving force of societal change and anti-authoritarianism, which potentially others working-class and immigrant populations as system-complicit and representing the „background" of social change.Type:conference paper - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
