Description
The adoption of information and communication technology in healthcare, commonly referred to as e-health, is not only seen as an exceptional opportunity for improving effectiveness, efficiency, and quality of health services, but also for increasing transparency of economic activities and availability of information in real time. Albeit the great potential proliferated by research and public media as well as massive investments into technology and research by regional and national governmental authorities, the track record of "successful" e-health initiatives is still relatively short.
Evidence exists that a major reason why so many e-health initiatives fail, is because national health information strategies often do not take into account the capabilities and demands of local health actors; in others: there is a gap between "e-health thinkers" and "e-health doers".
The aim of this project is to investigate the following research questions: What is e-health strategy success/failure and how can it be measured? What are significant social, technological, economic, and political drivers and facilitating conditions that affect the implementation of an e-health strategy? How do these factors impact upon e-health strategy success/failure?

Item type:Publication, Explorative Clustering of Clinical User Profiles: A First Step towards User-centered Health Information SystemsThe literature in health information systems and medical informatics reports contradictory findings with regards to acceptance, routinization behavior, and use of technology in healthcare. A possible reason for that is the deficiency of certain studies to adequately conceptualize health professionals as «users» of technology. From a pragmatic view, many medical systems suffer from a lack of user-centricity, which often provokes a certain level of resistance or negative attitude toward technology among health professionals. Clinical user profiles may be a first step in assisting researchers and practitioners in designing more user-centered systems as well as more precise usability and adoption studies. By means of an exploratory cluster analysis based on the answers of an online survey with 108 health professionals, three different user profiles were identified: the «delegator», the «all-rounder», and the «supporter». It is expected that the presented alternative view on health information systems users may allow scientists to improve the explanatory power of value assessments and usability studies as well as designers to better adapt their solutions to the context and interests of health professionals.Type:conference paper
