Description
In the recent past considerable programmes of active labour market policy were introduced in Switzerland. Using and extending the microeconometric evaluation framework we will try to understand whether participants benefited from participation in the various types of programmes. In the final stage of the project we should be able to include all Swiss unemployed with all the information from their unemployment and social security records available into the concluding evaluation.
A new project will investigate the influence of caseworker characteristics and unemployment office management on the effectiveness of active labour market policies.

The first part of this project began in early 1998 and was completed in May 2000. It was joint work with Michael Gerfin (University of Bern). This research was contractual work for the Staatssekretariat für Wirtschaft (seco; Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs).
The project was continued with the support of the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF) (National Research Programme 43 - Formation and Employment, october 2000 - october 2003).
A third part of the project is again contractual work for the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (seco), in collaboration with infras. It starts in 2004 and will last until end of 2005.

Item type:Publication, Kids or courses? Gender differences in the effects of active labor market policiesWe investigate active labor market programs in Austria. We find only small effects, if any, for most of the programs. However, the programs may have unintended consequences for women. In particular for younger women, a key effect of the programs and one reason for the male-female effect differential that is observed in the literature is to reduce or postpone pregnancies and to increase their attachment to the labor force.
