Description
What do managers do? The classical view says that the manager organizes, coordinates, plans, and controls. Henry Mintzberg, however, showed in 1973 that the facts suggest otherwise. He further questioned how managers could be trained if the nature of their work is not even described in an appropriate manner, not to mention understood. Mintzberg's original book "The Nature of Managerial Work" became a seminal piece of research which had a great influence on researchers and business practitioners alike.
In the field of entrepreneurship, there is still a large ignorance about what the entrepreneurs actually do in their daily activities. The question of what constitute the key entrepreneurs' activities and how those activities are best accomplished remains unanswered. If we want to develop effective training and teaching programs in entrepreneurship we should know what kind of activities entrepreneurs actually perform.
Therefore we want to find answers to the following research questions:
1. What activities do entrepreneurs accomplish?
2. How do successful entrepreneurs accomplish these activities?
We use the sociological method of structured observation to capture the nature of the entrepreneur's activities. Within the research project, which includes a study for Ernst & Young and multiple dissertation projects, we observed more than 20 entrepreneurs.
