Description
Ziel des Projekts ist die Entwicklung eines Gesamtkonzepts sowie eines Methodenbaukastens zur Optimierung des gesamten Effekts von Exploration (Innovation) und Exploitation (Ausschöpfung des bestehenden Produktportfolios) durch die intelligente Kombination der Struktur und Aktivitäten des Produktionsnetzwerkes, der Entwicklung und der Geschäftsbereiche. Angestrebt wird dabei die Stärkung der Standorte und der Funktionen durch die Maximierung von Innovation und Effizienz unter Berücksichtigung des Gesamteffekts.

PublicationThe Effect of Culture, Process and Structure on Exploration and Exploitation in Traditional Manufacturing Networks versus Lead Factory Networks(European Operations Manangement Association, 2011-07-03)
;Deflorin, Patricia ;Wallimann, Philippe ;Dietl, HelmutHollweg, M.Based on an empirical analysis of 52 manufacturing companies from the German-speaking part of Europe, we show that exploration and exploitation can be achieved independently and simultaneously in traditional and lead factory networks. Although in both networks culture influences exploitation, the effects of process and structure on exploration and exploitation are network specific. The results show that the underlying influencing factors differ in both networks, which makes specific investments necessary to achieve exploration and exploitation.Type: conference paper -

;Deflorin, PatriciaDietl, HelmutIn this research paper, we discuss how two distinct network structures influence exploration and exploitation and therefore influence the potential of achieving competitive advantage. In particular, we discuss three pairs of capabilities and how they affect exploration and exploitation in a traditional network structure compared to a lead factory concept. We conclude that the lead factory concept has the higher potential of generating competitive advantage through exploration and exploitation than the traditional network structure.Type: conference paper -

In order to understand the benefits of a lead factory network, research has to move on from the solely description of the concept to the analysis if a manufacturing network can benefit from the existence of a lead factory per se or if the lead factory is only preferable in certain circumstances. The study at hand derives five dimensions which support, depending on their characteristics, higher performance achievements when having a lead factory integrated in the manufacturing network.Type: conference paper

;Deflorin, Patricia ;Dietl, Helmut ;Lang, MarkusPurpose - The purpose of this paper is to compare two distinct network structures to determine and show which structure is more profitable. Specifically, it aims to show which factors render the lead factory concept advantageous. Design/methodology/approach - Based on a simple, two-stage model for prototype and serial production, the authors highlight factors that determine the relative advantages and disadvantages of the lead factory concept in comparison to an archetype network. The archetype network mirrors those networks that have not implemented special strategic plant roles. Findings - The analysis shows that the lead factory concept benefits from an efficient knowledge transfer. Particularly, it is more profitable than the archetype network under the following conditions: there are a high number of production plants; the adaptation costs for implementing the transferred prototype from the lead factory to the plant are low; the manufacturing costs for the prototype are high; and the manufacturing processes are not highly specific or knowledge intensive.
