A Taxonomy and Question catalog for Process Mining Analysis Questions(Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2025-10-24); ; ;Gentile, Victoria ;Resinas, ManuelAnalysts play a critical role in examining and interpreting data in process mining projects. However, specific goals for such projects are not always clearly stated nor translated into concrete analysis questions, hindering analysts to derive analysis results effectively. To address this issue, the authors in this work follow an established method for taxonomy design in information system research and propose a categorization schema for the key components of process mining analysis questions. The authors collect a diverse set of such questions by conducting a review of analysis reports and a survey with practitioners and by gathering input from a tool vendor. The resulting taxonomy classifies analysis questions along six dimensions: Use case, perspective, primary goal, cognitive step, context, and data level, each with distinct categories and sub-categories. Additionally, the categorized set of the 405 collected analysis questions forms a question catalog. The taxonomy and question catalog are evaluated through interviews, illustrative scenarios, a case study with two organizations that applied them for question design, and a survey with students. The evaluations confirm the applicability of the taxonomy for question categorization and question design. These challenges have been collected by an open call to the community, discussed and refined in a workshop setting, and described here in detail, including a motivation why these problems are worth investigating. Item type:Publication, What makes life for process mining analysts difficult? A reflection of challenges(2023-11-17); ; Over the past few years, several software companies have emerged that offer process mining tools to assist enterprises in gaining insights into their process executions. However, the effective application of process mining technologies depends on analysts who need to be proficient in managing process mining projects and providing process insights and improvement opportunities. To contribute to a better understanding of the difficulties encountered by analysts and to pave the way for the development of enhanced and tailored support for them, this work reveals the challenges they perceive in practice. In particular, we identify 23 challenges based on interviews with 41 analysts, which we validate using a questionnaire survey. We provide insights into the relevancy of the process mining challenges and present mitigation strategies applied in practice to overcome them. Item type:Publication, Seamless conceptual modeling of processes with transactional and analytical dataIn the field of Business Process Management (BPM), modeling business processes and related data is a critical issue since process activities need to manage data stored in databases. The connection between processes and data is usually handled at the implementation level, even if modeling both processes and data at the conceptual level should help designers in improving business process models and identifying requirements for implementation. Especially in data- and decision-intensive contexts, business process activities need to access data stored both in databases and data warehouses. In this paper, we complete our approach for defining a novel conceptual view that bridges process activities and data. Item type:Publication, Visualization Use in Process Mining AnalysisProcess mining analysis relies on visual representations to support analysts in analyzing and improving processes. While a wide range of visualizations has been proposed, little empirical evidence exists on how these representations are actually used in practice. This paper investigates how analysts use visualizations during process mining analysis, based on an observational study with 33 participants. We encoded the analysts’ interactions and thought processes and analyzed the use of visualizations over time, and in relation to both the focus of the analysis and the analytical tasks being performed. Our findings are twofold. We first describe the use of 12 distinct visualization types, and highlight a strong dominance of network-based representations, particularly for flow-oriented analysis and core analytical tasks such as exploration and descriptive modeling. Second, we uncover perceived difficulties in visualization use that expose limitations of their current implementation in existing tools. The findings of our analysis provide a sound foundation for the design of more effective, user-centered visualizations for process mining.Type:conference paperJournal:Enterprise, Business-Process and Information Systems Modeling
