Item type:Publication, Connecting Thoughts and Actions: A Managerial Process Model on Circular Business Model InnovationABSTRACT Addressing environmental grand challenges such as resource scarcity requires circular business model innovation (CBMI) that enables firms to efficiently close and slow resource cycles through novel activity systems. Drawing on a grounded theory approach based on 59 in‐depth interviews with top managers from Swiss SMEs, we developed a process model that explains how cognitive and behavioral managerial antecedents interact to drive CBMI. Anchored in dynamic capability (DC) theory, the model conceptualizes CBMI as a three‐phase process and identifies six key managerial antecedents. We show how perceived environmental embeddedness and collaborative ideation support the sensing of circular opportunities, how foresighted thrift and cultivating organizational change enable the seizing of resources, and how enduring commitment and continuous experimentation drive business model reconfiguration. We contribute to the CBMI literature by advancing a processual understanding of managerial agency and applying DC theory to explicate the cognitive‐behavioral dynamics through which DCs are activated and sustained.Type:journal articleJournal:Business Strategy and the EnvironmentScopus© Citations 1 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Exploring the Circular Economy – Pathways to a Sustainable System within Planetary Boundaries
At a time characterized by unprecedented environmental challenges, the concept of a circular economy (CE) epitomizes systemic change with real ecological impact. Due to increasing pressure to act, environmental sustainability has witnessed a surge in visibility within both corporate strategy and communication as well as political agenda setting and discourse. Yet, the magnitude of contemporary human activities in crossing planetary boundaries remains unparalleled. A profound gap persists between awareness, intention, and action, both individually and collectively.
Type:journal articleJournal:Swiss Journal of BusinessVolume:79Issue:3 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Breaking Barriers: Accelerating the Transition to a Circular Economy
Global resource consumption is continuously increasing, accelerating the transgression of planetary boundaries. Solving the related environmental problems requires targeted action and a systemic transition from the prevailing linear economic model to a circular one. This paper adopts a systemic approach to identify the transition barriers across relevant levels, including product, business, ecosystem, industry, and society/regulation systems. It contributes to research by structuring and mapping the barriers based on eight underlying mechanisms. These mechanisms help explain how the barriers function and why they hinder the transition of socio-technical regimes from linear to circular ones. For example, the Prisoner’s Dilemma describes how short-term self-interests often overrule collective benefits and leads to suboptimal outcomes. The mechanisms also provide insights into potential solutions for addressing the barriers and accelerating the implementation of a circular economy. Illustrative examples from practice are introduced to demonstrate that “breaking barriers” is both possible and necessary—primarily through various forms of collaboration.
Type:journal articleJournal:Swiss Journal of BusinessVolume:79Issue:3 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item type:Publication, From Economies of Scale to Economies of Sufficiency: Antecedents of Corporate Sufficiency(2025-01); ; ;Hsieh Nien-heThe paradigm of unlimited economic growth on a finite planet is widely acknowledged as a root cause of sustainability challenges, yet the organizational transformations required to transcend this paradigm remain underexplored. This study introduces corporate sufficiency as a holistic principle that guides firms to align supply and demand within the boundaries of social and ecological carrying capacities. Based on a qualitative analysis of 70 sufficiency-oriented firms, we identify three ethical antecedents of corporate sufficiency: (1) responsibility, reflecting moral awareness to prioritize social and ecological well-being; (2) relationality, enabling sensitivity to context-specific social and ecological thresholds in relationships; and (3) excellence, fostering accountability to uphold the highest sustainability and quality standards through a culture of continuous learning. Each antecedent is found to imply an ethical stance: deontology, ethics of care, and virtue ethics, respectively. We propose a model of corporate sufficiency that articulates a distinct business logic prioritizing social and ecological stewardship over economic expansion. By challenging the instrumental logic prevalent in sustainable consumption literature, this study contributes to the fields of sufficiency and business ethics, offering an alternative perspective on the corporate role in advancing sustainable development.Type:conference paper - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
