PublicationNew Venues for Collaborative Business Model Innovation Through EcosystemsDigital transformation enables novel opportunities for incumbents and new entries to collaborate and jointly create value in ecosystems. Ecosystems can be considered as aligned and integrated business models along the customer journey. Using two illustrative examples from financial services, we explain what ecosystems are and which factors must be considered for success. We highlight three use cases that underline the significance of ecosystems for the financial service industry today and explain why ecosystems are game changers for future research on business model innovation.Type: book section

Since then, research, inventions and patent protection have become heavily developed along with ethical standards and the legal patent system. Here, we demonstrate practical implications for the use and the management of patents based on the neuroscience research and development company Prionics – the first of its kind to develop and patent an antibody-based test for the prion disease bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). -
PublicationAI for decision-making in connected businessWith a growing number of connected devices producing exponentially more data, the value of artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) is increasing rapidly for businesses. We outline the value add of AI/ML for decision-making in firms and present use cases and tools to generate data-driven value. We discuss various implementation challenges and solution approaches. Successfully executing on AI/ML applications hinges on preparing the company, managing the portfolio of projects, using interdisciplinary teams, establishing strong technical foundations, and, importantly, generating trust in AI/ML throughout the system lifecycle.

Specifically for manufacturing companies, this transition towards the Internet of Things (IoT) opens up completely new business opportunities. However, most companies still struggle to monetize the IoT. Recent findings suggest that more than half of all IoT projects fail. In this article, we want to show how manufacturing companies can successfully leverage the IoT. More specifically, we elaborate on IoT platforms and their potential to create tangible business results, using the Bosch IoT Suite as an example. To illustrate this, we present six horizontal IoT use cases that have proven to be very successful across industry domains at Bosch and its customers.Type: book section -

In fact, eight of the ten most valuable companies worldwide follow a platform business model. Their success depends heavily on developing and sustaining network effects. This makes it almost inevitable for managers to analyze their own opportunities and risks in the platform economy. For traditional and product-focused companies, the Internet of Things has created new opportunities for platform business. In this article, we explain how the underlying platform mechanics work and bring together the perspectives of IoT, platform, and ecosystem. Using three successful but distinct IoT platform examples, we illustrate that platforms are not only for digital players and highlight key success factors for any practitioner looking to develop and manage an (IoT) platform.Type: book section -

PublicationPatent Strategies in the Networked EconomyThis article discusses the opportunities and risks that come along with patents in the new tech business. It takes into account several examples from tech companies that experienced lawsuits and conflicts with competitors over inventions in scheme, code, technology, and shape. With the rise of automated monitoring, communication, and travel, companies should prepare for a more aggressive and value-driven patent strategy and fiercer requirements for enforcement of those patents. Be aware, these patents also may cover software and algorithms. It must be said, however, that the right to a patent does grant automatically exclusive use and prevention of imitation, nor freedom of action.Type: book section
