In his adventurous life, Mixail Bakunin visited Switzerland three times for an extended period of time. In the 1840s, he resided in Zurich and admired the revolutionary spirit of the young republic. He was, however, disappointed with the fact that the Swiss republic was an entirely liberal and bourgeois project, rather than a communist one. In 1869, he met the famous Russian terrorist Sergej Nečaev in Geneva, and came up with a plan for a “secret society” that should overthrow the democratic governments to prepare Western European societies for anarchism. However, in the 1870s, Bakunin became increasingly disappointed with the prospects for an anarchist revolution, mainly because he no longer believed in the perspicacity of the proletarians themselves, and their will to fight. He resided in a villa near Locarno and enjoyed the epicurean pleasures of life.
