Abstract
B2B sales organizations face new, challenging dynamics in B2B buying that must be addressed to achieve future success. These new dynamics include the involvement of various actors in decision-making, a preference for digital interactions, and a nonlinear buying journey. Social selling has recently gained attention as a sales approach that addresses these new dynamics and thus is becoming a critical success factor. Although there is a lot of discussion about social selling, organizations still struggle with it in practice. Therefore, the main goal of this dissertation is to provide guidance on how B2B organizations can leverage and manage social selling successfully. The dissertation examines three aspects in particular, taking into account existing research gaps. First, this work sheds light on content and post characteristics driving B2B buyer engagement with social selling posts on professional social networking sites. The results of a choice-based conjoint experiment with 295 B2B buyers showed that buyers prefer to engage with social selling posts that share information with a broad focus based on an objective source and that are created as a salespersons own contribution. Second, the dissertation provides an in-depth and comprehensive understanding of social selling risks and appropriate risk response strategies. From 18 semistructured interviews with various social selling actors, 20 major social selling risks were identified across five risk categories: reputational, social, compliance, competitive, and operational risks. In addition, 11 risk response strategies were identified that can be summarized in the four areas of enablement, governance, trust building, and tolerance. Third, the dissertation provides a comprehensive and integrated view of the factors that organizations should embrace to best prepare for social selling. Based on a synthesis of the learnings from a systematic literature review and the findings from the empirical studies, a social selling readiness model was developed that includes 16 readiness factors in five areas: strategy, activities, enablement, governance, and cultivation. In sum, this dissertation provides valuable knowledge to B2B organizations with which they can leverage and manage social selling successfully, address the challenging new dynamics of B2B buying, and thus become and stay relevant in the sales ecosystem.
