The primary objective of this presentation is to introduce and remember one of the most important Turkish female scientists, Prof. Dr. Çiğdem Kağıtçıbaşı, with respect and to give a summary of her life and works. She was a famous social psychologist and one of the most important representatives of the international research community of cultural psychology. Beside her academical works, she had been a pioneer in the education of girls and founded a parent child education foundation in Turkey (AÇEV), which is still operating today. The authors will summarize her cross-cultural research on the value of children and her theory of family change, which she developed for the first time in Turkey by examining the interactions between societal changes and family relations. She criticized the US- and European- centric dominance in psychological and sociological literature in particular on topics such as family relations, individualism/collectivism and modernization. As a result, she has developed a new and innovative hybrid concept of the self, the so-called autonomous-related self which belongs to a family model of emotional interdependence in modern societies. In this talk, we use our own empirical research on parenting in Germany and Turkey to show how productive Kağıtçıbaşı theory is in understanding the complexity and ambivalence of family relationships.
