Social Acceptance of Renewable Energy Diffusion in Europe: Conditions and implications of citizen financial participation

Abstract
In a context or urgent climate action and increasing energy insecurity, the European Union is placing renewed emphasis on the proactive participation of citizens in the diffusion of renewable energy across the EU as a means to realise a socially accepted energy transition while simultaneously expand investment volumes towards a more diverse set of market actors. The joint efforts of actor diversity and social acceptance, coupled with the dual challenges of underinvestment and democratic deficiency, aggregate to demand a thorough analysis of the ways in which citizen-financed RE diffusion efforts can be incentivised in order to help realise Europe’s climate and energy commitments by 2030.
Within this context, this PhD thesis contributes a better understanding of the role that different socio-economic conditions and policy support frameworks have for fostering an actor diverse electricity marketplace with the potential to uphold the development of citizen-financed renewable power plants that can jointly contribute to abridge the underinvestment of RETs and, in doing so, redress their democratically deficient market diffusion.
