Abstract
This dissertation's subject is the participation of 19th-century Polish exiles in the Russian Empire's colonial expansion in Central Asia's Kazakh steppes. With the theory of orality and literacy, postcolonial studies will constitute the fundamental analytical perspective for me. The colonialism agents were not only entrepreneurs, civil or army officials, but also missionaries, modernists, humanists, liberals and protagonists of science and progress. Travel literature that came out of the scientific expeditions or private voyages played a fundamental role in creating the European coherent objective image of the rest of the world. I want to look at the literature, literacy, and writing practices as an instrument of the Other's discursive subjugation, in space and time, where the Western archives became a field of fierce battles of Memory and Identity rise. Here below are four principal domains such as Bureaucratisation, Hybridisation, Orientalisation and Historicisation, where literacy and writing practices played an essential role in Western empires' colonial expansion. To paraphrase EdwardSaid, we can state that the strategies of the conquest of Central Asia directly impacted its perceptions, narrative constructions, and later reconstructions of its realities. Three case studies of Polish political prisoners in Siberia will serve me as illustrative material: Adolf Januszkiewicz, Bronislaw Zaleski, and Seweryn Gross. Their texts that were written during the scientific or diplomatic expeditions, describing the life and traditions of nomads, were of great importance for the Kazakh historiography and remain to be the essential sources of (re)construction of the national identity of the Kazakhs today. Political prisoners' status and the forced conditions of their stay and service for the Russian Empire were the overriding traits that characterised their relations with the authorities and steppe inhabitants. Therefore the main questions I want to look at are: how did the practices of taking private notes by Polish exiles become a part of the Orientalist discourse and foster its dissemination? Did the texts of the Polish exiles present an 'alternative' view among various imperial studies? To what extent was this kind of documents marked by the imperialism and correlated with other documents collected in the imperial archives, and to what extent did they go beyond the limits of the discourse imposed by the imperial power?

Przedmiotem rozprawy jest udzial XIX-wiecznych polskich zeslanców w ekspansji kolonialnej Imperium Rosyjskiego na kazachskich stepach Azji Centralnej. Wraz z teoria oralnosci i pismiennosci studia postkolonialne beda dla mnie podstawowa perspektywa analityczna. Agentami kolonializmu byli nie tylko przedsiebiorcy, urzednicy cywilni czy wojskowi, ale takze misjonarze, humanisci, liberalowie i protagonisci nauki i postepu. Literatura podróznicza, teksty pisane w trakcie wypraw naukowych lub prywatnych podrózy odegrala wazna role w tworzeniu koherentnego, obiektywnego, europejskiego obrazu reszty swiata. Chce spojrzec na literature, praktyki pismienne i pismo, jako narzedzie dyskursywnego ujarzmienia Innego w czasie i przestrzeni, gdzie zachodnie archiwa staly sie polem zacieklych walk o pamiec i tozsamosc. W tym celu wyrózniam cztery glówne domeny, takie jak biurokratyzacja, hybrydyzacja, orientalizacja i historyzacja, w których umiejetnosc czytania i pisania oraz praktyki pismienne odegraly zasadnicza role w ekspansji kolonialnej zachodnich imperiów. Parafrazujac Edwarda Saida, mozna stwierdzic, ze strategie podboju Azji Centralnej wplynely bezposrednio na jej poznawania, a takze konstrukcje narracyjne, oraz na pózniejsze rekonstrukcje historycznej rzeczywistosci. Jako material ilustracyjny posluza mi trzy studia przypadków polskich wiezniów politycznych na Syberii: Adolfa Januszkiewicza, Bronislawa Zaleskiego i Seweryna Grossa. Ich teksty, które powstaly podczas wypraw naukowych lub dyplomatycznych, opisujace zycie i tradycje nomadów, mialy ogromne znaczenie dla kazachskiej historiografii i do dzis pozostaja waznym zródlem (re)konstruowania tozsamosci narodowej Kazachów. Status wiezniów politycznych oraz przymusowe warunki ich pobytu i sluzby na rzecz Imperium Rosyjskiego byly nadrzednymi cechami charakteryzujacymi ich stosunki z wladza i mieszkancami stepu. Dlatego glówne pytania, którym chce sie przyjrzec, to: w jaki sposób praktyki robienia prywatnych notatek polskich zeslanców weszly do dyskursu orientalistycznego i sprzyjaly jego upowszechnieniu? Czy teksty polskich zeslanców prezentowaly alternatywne spojrzenie w porównaniu do innych tekstów imperialnych? Na ile tego rodzaju dokumenty byly naznaczone imperializmem i na ile przypominaly inne dokumenty zgromadzone w imperialnych archiwach, a na ile wykraczaly poza granice dyskursu narzuconego przez wladze cesarska?
