Abstract
The world of work is constantly changing. The recent Corona crisis, which triggered a digitalisation push and made new forms of work suitable for the masses, is a good example of this. Since the beginning of the 21st century, the working formats of the creative industries have been considered a model of the future working world. Creativity, self-fulfilment and flexibility are some of the keywords. There is talk of the creativity imperative, creativity complex and creative cities – everyone and everything should be creative! In the present dissertation, the experience of work in the creative industries is empirically researched. Employees of an architecture office and an advertising agency are given a voice through qualitative interviews. The use of Grounded Theory Methodology enables a view into how the actors experience their everyday working life, what self-relationships they have and how they perceive working relationships. The findings of this study disenchant the notion that the creative industries, which is not homogeneous and cannot serve as a framework concept: other factors such as organisational structure, culture and management practices have a stronger influence on the experience of work than affiliation to the creative industries. Creativity plays only a partial role in the daily work routine and is moreover identified very generally as problem solving processes. Self-fulfilment is not pegged to artistically creative self-realisation, but to the use of individual abilities. As in an achievement-oriented society in general, performance and career are central, with leadership positions implicating primarily only ordinary management tasks and not increased creative freedom. A strong narrative and a unifying corporate culture create community and shape both work and life. Working relationships are not only important for cooperation, but also for the wellbeing and atmosphere in the organization and serve as moral support.
