Abstract
Innovation ecosystems that are built around new technologies need to accumulate a set of complementors in order to bring a value proposition to the markets. This paper extends our understanding of innovation ecosystem governance by highlighting that governance strategies vary a lot among different complementors – i.e. not all complementors are treated similarly. By using a multi-case study with seven cases from digital services, we explore how and why the governance strategy (formal and relational governance) of complementors within the same ecosystem varies. Our findings explain how governance is conducted when hierarchical power is lacking, how governance mechanisms can vary among players, and how governance evolves. Our study contributes to the innovation ecosystem literature by highlighting the heterogeneous governance strategies as it comes to different complementors.
