Abstract
The increasing volatility of their companies environment is a growing concern for executives.Environmental scanning IS-based and complementing the accounting information systems domain can help to manage this challenge. A substantial body of knowledge for such IS exists, but these conceptsoften go unused in practice. A current survey reveals that they continue to lack applicability. This article develops five design guidelines for environmental scanning systems that are moreapplicable than those designed by previous research. In doing so, we first compile a set of requirementsfrom the principle of economic efficiency and use findings from the absorptive capacity theoryto specify them. Challenging several implementations with these requirements in a multi-case studygenerates lessons learned that we synthesize into design guidelines. They address diverse areas:design a more comprehensive model for information gathering, set up a collective learning process forinformation interpretation, empower management techniques familiar to executives with IS for informationusage, design for more interorganizational integration of environmental scanning systems, and faster prototyping. Keywords: balanced chance and risk management, regulatory needs, accounting information systems, new information and communication technology (ICT), case study research
