    Towards B2B Platform Theory: Understanding the Functional Core of B2B Marketplaces

    Platform marketplaces have been extensively researched. However, most of this research focused on B2C cases, attributing a ‘dominant platform logic’ based on two-sided markets, network effects, or winner-takes-it-all dynamics. Applying this dominant platform logic in structurally heterogeneous and inherently complex business-to-business (B2B) environments holds limited explanatory character due to the fundamentally different nature. Recognizing this gap, we provide a more nuanced perspective on B2B marketplaces. Using fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) on 46 product marketplaces, we identify three configurations of core functionality that significantly exceed mere matching of supply and demand. Our findings reveal that process integration, decision support, solution modularity, and interface accessibility contribute to B2B marketplace success. Identifying significantly more complex value creation mechanisms of B2B marketplaces, we aim to contribute early insights to B2B platform theory-building while critically assessing the applicability of B2C ‘dominant platform logic’ in B2B contexts, highlighting the need for a more context-sensitive approach.

    Adopting Generative AI in Industrial Product Companies: Challenges and Early Pathways
    Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) is rapidly transforming industries, yet its adoption in industrial product companies remains fraught. Unlike software and service firms, they often lack digital expertise, are challenged with legacy systems, and operate in a complex environment of hardware, software, and service. While the hype surrounding GenAI promises future breakthrough innovation, industrial product companies must navigate intricate challenges to realize its full impact. This study, based on expert interviews with industry leaders and GenAI technology providers, identifies nine key challenges and corresponding countermeasures that shape GenAI adoption in industrial product companies. By structuring these insights across core dimensions-technology, organization, and environment-we bridge the gap between expectation and execution, offering practical guidance for firms seeking to move beyond experimentation toward meaningful value creation. Our findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the nuanced adoption processes of GenAI in industrial contexts.

    Towards Conceptualizing Software-Defined Vehicles: A Systematic Review and Future Research Avenues
    Software has become increasingly pivotal in transforming products, processes, and business models across industries. This shift is especially evident in the European automotive industry, as vehicles become progressively defined by software. However, this transformation induces substantial challenges, exemplified by Volkswagen's struggles establishing an effective information systems (IS) organization, pioneering vehicle software. These challenges present a unique research opportunity for the IS community, with its interdisciplinary nature and capability to bridge the realms of engineering and management. To establish a common understanding, we conducted a scoping review of 425 scientific articles and 62 industry reports, providing a preliminary overview of software-defined vehicle (SDV) research. We identify 13 key topics, highlighting a significant gap between academic and practitioner perspectives, thereby contributing to an initial conceptualization of the term 'SDV'. Our findings aim to guide future IS research in understanding and navigating the complexities of software-defined products and their transformative impact on organizations.

    The Rise and Fall of App Stores: How and Why Product Platforms Pivot
    Established product companies increasingly embrace platforms in the form of app stores to enhance their products through digital services. However, succeeding with such endeavors and introducing a successful product platform poses significant challenges and puts managers responsible under considerable pressure. Over four years, we have accompanied three product companies in establishing profound product platform businesses. In doing so, we derived insights into how and why product platforms pivot in realizing an app store on top of their physical products. Our research emphasizes how these companies shifted from embracing a broad ecosystem of third-party developers to forming strategic partnerships and focusing on established products as innovation foundations. Moreover, we present actionable managerial recommendations for managers venturing product platforms. Thereby, we guide managers being confronted with managing the ambidexterity involved in establishing platform business in addition to product business.

    Cutting through Complexity: Strategic Options for Designing a B2B Innovation Platform
    Designing and establishing a B2B platform business challenges many company executives and managers. Incentuated by the potential benefits and business opportunities, numerous B2B companies commit to this strategic venture. However, real-world showcases that most B2B companies fail with their platform endeavors. To help company executives and managers navigate the challenges and obstacles of designing B2B innovation platforms more effectively, we highlight seven strategic options and possible solutions to lean on. We base our findings on interviews, discussions, and workshops with C-level executives and managers from three incumbents that successfully established a B2B innovation platform. By following our strategic options and possible solutions, practitioners can cut through the complexity of designing and operating B2B innovation platforms to establish new business from scratch.

    Revisiting the IIoT Platform Graveyard: Key Learnings from Failed IIoT Platform Initiatives
    The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) has led to a competitive race among digital and incumbent players to establish IIoT platforms. However, despite the undisputed potential of the IIoT, a first wave of IIoT platforms failed around 2018, with GE’s Predix being the most prominent one. Nevertheless, building upon valuable lessons learned, the IIoT platform market continued to grow significantly. We now experience a second wave of IIoT platform failures, with companies like Siemens, Google, and SAP divesting or restructuring significant parts of their IIoT platform. Acknowledging this, we revisited the IIoT platform graveyard to challenge and extend existing lessons learned. Hence, we interviewed major IIoT platforms and customers that were impacted by IIoT platform failures. We identified six key learnings that we integrated into a preliminary model for IIoT platform growth, highlighting evolutionary steps for successful platform growth. These findings provide practitioners strategic orientation for establishing IIoT platforms long-term.
