Abstract
Mobile payment, broadly defined, has extended its leading position as the most widely used payment method in Switzerland, both in terms of the number of transactions and turnover. Today, 16 per cent of the Swiss population are mobile payers. This means that these people make more than 75 per cent of their payments using a mobile device such as a mobile phone or smartwatch. Of the remaining payment methods, the shares of debit cards (non-mobile use) and cash remained virtually unchanged in terms of the number of transactions, while the share of credit cards (non-mobile use) decreased. Mobile payments (broad definition), bills and cash increased their share of sales, while the share of non-mobile use of debit and credit cards fell.

In the face-to-face business, cash is in first place in terms of the number of transactions, just ahead of debit cards (non-mobile use). After a smaller increase than in the previous surveys, mobile payment by broad definition remains in third place in the face-to-face business. One of the reasons for this is that mobile payment in the true sense of the word did not gain any further share in face-to-face business in terms of the number of transactions. In the case of credit cards, there is a shift from non-mobile use of the physical card to mobile use of the credit card as a deposited billing product in the face-to-face business.

The proportion of the population who do not carry cash in their wallets has increased significantly and reached its highest level since the start of the SPM survey. At the same time, the proportion of the population who are critical of the abolition of cash has also reached a new high.

The use of neobanks continues to increase among the population. All three largest providers, Revolut, Yuh and Neon, gained additional users. Neobanks continue to be used primarily as a supplement to traditional retail banking services.

Less than half of the Swiss population are familiar with instant payments. Just under 20 per cent have already made an instant payment at least once. If no additional costs are incurred, around half of those surveyed can imagine using instant payments more frequently in the future.
