Abstract
Trade secrets, as crucial assets in the contemporary knowledge-driven economy, provide organizations with a distinct competitive advantage and hold significant economic value. This research delves into the intricate management and strategic implications of trade secrets, examining both their role as mechanisms and practices for value creation, as well as the strategies employed for effective knowledge management. Drawing upon a comprehensive collection of data from 56 firms through in-depth interviews, this study leverages emerging theories in knowledge flows and innovation management to analyze the dynamics of secrecy. It holistically incorporates trade secrets within the broader framework of secrecy, recognizing them as a strategic instrument for appropriating innovation. In doing so, the paper advances the theoretical comprehension of trade secrets and secrecy and bridges the gap among management, economics, and legal literature. Moreover, it introduces a novel theoretical framework that clarifies the distinctions between secrecy as a mechanism and secrecy as a practice, unveiling the intricate interplay between trade secrets, secrecy, and value creation.
