Abstract
In this paper we examine the critical and evolving role of intellectual property (IP) management across the typical development phases of start-ups. Drawing on a unique curated international collection of analyses and case studies, we explore the IP challenges and IP management practices of startups by adopting a dual-methodological approach involving a systematic literature review and modified grounded theory, employing advanced coding techniques using the MAXQDA tool and sophisticated post-coding data analysis. This approach enables the objective classification of qualitative data, providing practical implications for stakeholders. Our findings underscore the importance of early IP planning, the value of intangible assets, and the necessity of aligning IP strategy with business goals. Effective IP management can enhance start-up success and longevity, even in the face of resource constraints and complex IP laws. This study equips stakeholders in the start-up ecosystem with valuable insights and identifies actionable avenues for future research in IP management. By fully understanding and managing IP, start-ups can effectively navigate competitive landscapes, attract investors, and ensure long-term sustainability.
