Abstract
The practices of hacking and leaking have come together in the last decade. A various group of actors, following different agenda, is launching cyber-attacks with the aim of obtaining otherwise inaccessible information with the aim of disclosing it. This has happened in the contexts of hacktivism, political influence or investigate reporting through the actions of hackers whose affiliations and goals can vary sensibly. The entry will outline the "public interest hack" phenomenon through a series of case studies aimed at describing the various actors involved, how these leaks gain visibility in the contemporary public sphere and how journalists can be involved.
